Internships

Company Visit: Nikon

Internships
offer students a chance to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to the real world, to experience business practices first-hand, and to expand their network of business connections. They also give students and companies a chance to get to know each other, and can lead to employment opportunities after graduation.

Many Global MBA students do internships during their time in our program, either in Japan or overseas. Among the business areas they have worked in are market entry research, business development, data analysis, diversity management, and corporate communications. Students may also use an internship as part of the research for their master thesis or research project report.

Student Internship Experience

Internship Experience

Widad Lamallaoui, Morocco
Class of 2017
Internship experience at Nissan Motor Corporation

There are two main reasons why I chose to join the Global MBA at Doshisha Business School. The first reason is its highly diverse environment where students and professors from a large number of countries share and create knowledge. The second reason is its focus on culture and creativity as one of the school’s core focus areas. These two elements were the basis upon which I built my experience through the program.
Within the same dynamic, I joined Nissan Motor Corporation for a period of one month and I worked with the multimedia content creation unit as an intern. The journey at Nissan was perfectly in line with my learning at DBS. The team was international and creativity was key in their activities. The MBA program, combined with the internship, helped me understand the Japanese working environment, as well as improve my problem-solving skills, my communication abilities, and my strategic thinking.

Doshisha University Career Services

For students interested in working in Japan or for a Japanese company overseas, the Global MBA provides practical training and advice on job hunting in Japan, access to Japanese language classes offered by the university’s Center for Language and Culture, and the chance (for those with sufficient Japanese ability) to take a number of classes in our sister Japanese MBA Program.

Among the career services offered by our Careers Center are several that are specifically for job-hunting in Japan:

E-Career Web Portal

The E-Career website helps students explore and become familiar with the job search and selection process in Japan. It is also a valuable resource for career information on upcoming seminars, events, and workshops; job listings; alumni contact information; and internship opportunities.

Company Information Sessions

Each year, Doshisha invites over 100 companies to our campus for career fairs and information sessions. These give students a chance to explore job opportunities and industries they may not have considered before.

Job Listings

Career Center receives over 3,000 job listings each year from companies all over Japan. This list is constantly updated and offers job opportunities in a wide variety of industries.

Japanese firms recruiting international students

With a shrinking domestic market, the strong yen, and a generation of young Japanese that tends to look more inward than abroad, Japanese companies are sharply increasing their recruitment of non-Japanese as they expand their global operations. What these companies seek in their non-Japanese recruits are language ability, an understanding of Japanese business practices, strong drive, and the communication skills and perspective that come from experience in a multi-cultural environment. Many are also making efforts to shift their corporate culture from the closed style of the past—with rigid labor practices and reliance on Japanese-speaking staff—to a more open, international style that welcomes diversity, new ideas, and fresh perspectives on how to do business.

Hear from our Global MBA alumni

alumnicareers9

Ahista Hussain, South Africa (Class of 2019)
Senior Advisor Environmental , Eskom (South Africa)

DBS has exceeded my expectations for “education guided by conscience”. I joined DBS to pivot my corporate career from environmental management to green business development. The faculty imparted a variety of tools for design and critical thinking, quality research, and personal reflection. These tools and my experience empower me to address business challenges. I zoom out to understand the context of business operations and zoom in to analyse the details of business issues. This enables me to create data driven solutions and effectively communicate my results. I am grateful for my time and growth at DBS.

Careers (Alumni)

Jake Chesser, USA (Class of 2018)
Marketing Strategist, Hitachi Construction Machinery (Japan)

My years at DBS were some of the most interesting of my life. The diversity in our class led me to build friendships with people from all over the world that I never would have had the chance to meet before studying here. The experience and expertise of my classmates and our professors provided me with a valuable global network I will be able to leverage for the rest of my career, whether that continues to be here in Japan, or anywhere else in the world.

Careers (Alumni)

Thuy Thi Minh Nguyen, Vietnam (Class of 2017)
Robert Bosch Engineering Vietnam

One month before officially graduating, I was able to secure a job at Robert Bosch Engineering Vietnam as a team leader to work in the accounting domain on BOSCH Global projects for the Asia Pacific region. Throughout my 2 years studying in the Global MBA program at Doshisha University in a diverse environment, I have developed a wide range of knowledge and skills which have proven to be very useful for my current position. In addition, regarding my personal life, the experience living in Kyoto has enabled me to be more independent and more flexible in adapting to new environments and places.
