Jin Montesano, Executive Officer and Senior Managing Director at LIXIL Group Corporation, visited Kyoto and Doshisha Business School last week to speak about LIXIL's efforts related to social responsibility and purpose. Ms. Montesano hold several important positions at LIXIL as Executive Officer and Senior Managing Director, Public Affairs, Investor Relations, External Affairs, Corporate Responsibility at LIXIL Group Corporation; Chief Public Affairs Officer (CPAO) for LIXIL Water Technology (LIXIL Group Corporation); and Director, Senior Managing Director, and Chief Public Affairs Officer (CPAO) for LIXIL Corporation.
In line with the title of her lecture "Business with Purpose," Ms. Montesano introduced LIXIL's work related to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, specifically focused on Goal #6: to ensure access to water and sanitation for all. In order to help the world to achieve this goal, LIXIL created a special team inside of their company devoted to developing a low-cost toilet that costs between $2 to $10 depending on the installation location and budget of the community or area where such toilets would be installed.
What was striking about Ms. Montesano's lecture, in addition to all of the insights related to the importance of purpose within an organization, was the ripple effects that this commitment has had. Not only is LIXIL's SATO Project focused on access to sanitation, but by making sanitation available through their SATO toilets, they are also impacting education rates among young girls, health and wellness within communities, and even employee engagement levels within LIXIL itself.
Ms. Montesano spent more than 30 minutes answering a number of questions from our MBA students, and left a positive and lasting impression on our overall understanding of sustainability and green business and how sustainability issues can create powerful and measurable results at community, corporate, and global levels when integrated with purpose.
All of us here at Doshisha would like to thank Ms. Montesano and LIXIL for making such a great contribution to our program, and we hope that we have the chance to hear from her again at some point in the near future.
