August 30th, 2010
Two of our GMBA students, Mr. E. Barden Smedberg, Jr. and Mr. Joey Zhou and our DBS faculty Dr. Andrew Staples participated in the Gion Festival on July 17th, 2010.
The Gion Festival is one of Japan's three biggest local festivals with a long tradition stretching back to 869 A.D.. It was a great honor and opportunity for DBS students and faculty to be involved with the festival.
The DBS representatives were joined by other international students and alumni of Doshisha University as they participated in the ‘Minami kannon yama' or the grand parade of floats (called hook) which are spectacularly decorated with beautiful tapestries and materials. These float are dedicated to Yoryu Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy and the parade is the culmination of the festival.
It was a beautifully hot and sunny day as participants pulled the floats through the city of Kyoto the magnificent hoko to the accompaniment of rhythmic music.

Global MBA Executive Seminar
July 30th, 2010
The Global MBA Executive Seminar series continued on July 30th when Mr.Stephen Mansfield, CEO of New Perspective, a fund asset manager based in Tokyo, delivered a talk titled 'Risk - and how to take advantage of it'.
Mr. Mansfield drew upon his previous experiences in the financial world (Credit Suisse, Credit Lyonnais and the Citadel Investment Group) and his present role as co-founder and CEO of New Perspective, the asset manager for hotels owned by Japan Leisure Hotels which listed on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange in early 2008. Mr. Mansfield was instrumental in creating the strategy and executing the listing process and New Perspective currently has 6 properties under management. Participants learnt the importance of focusing on the cash flow and how this drives the management and operations of the hotel portfolio with Mr. Mansfield giving clear examples of innovative and effective approaches to cost cutting.
Mr. Mansfield has also supported the GMBA by hosting internships where students are given live issues to work with while based in the heart of Tokyo. We thank Mr. Mansfield for his efforts and look forward to continuing relations between New Perspective and Doshisha Business School.
Global MBA Executive Seminar
July 2nd, 2010
The second Global MBA Executive Seminar, which was organized by Prof. Yasuo Nishiguchi was held on June 25th DBS welcomed Mr. Matthias Kurth, President of the Federal Network Agency for Electricity, Gas, Telecommunications, Post and Railway (Germany) to speak on the topic of “The Future of Information Technology”. The seminar was attended by students from both the Global MBA and Japanese MBA as well as by staff and students from within and beyond Doshisha University. The stimulating lecture was followed by a Q&A session on key issues of IT influences upon our economy, business and society. The focus was mainly upon Germany and EU, with discussions on how coordination and harmonization were essential for various key industries if full advantage is to be taken of effective and efficient networks based upon information technology. The issue is however common to the rest of the world and has great relevance beyond the EU. Mr. Kurth also touched upon how the government will regulate the system of information technology in order to maintain effective competition for the society. The seminar offered insightful and thought provoking perspectives, which was received with great appreciation by the audience.
At the end of the seminar, Dean Hasegawa presented gifts from the Univ. and two books; Open Integrated Business Management System (Hakuto Shobo) written by Prof. Yasuo Nishiguchi and Asian Business & Management (PalgraveMacmillan) co-edited by Dean, Hasegawa. Doshisha hosts executives from HEC
May 18th, 2010
DBS was delighted to again welcome a group of senior French executives from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales de Paris (HEC School of Management) as part of a two-week visit to Japan on Wednesday, 13th May. HEC is a consistently highly ranked business school and was evaluated by the Financial Times as the number one business school in Europe and second worldwide for executive education in 2009.
The seminar was convened around the theme of successful firms in Kyoto and followed a visit by the executives to Kyocera. Following greetings and a brief overview of the Global MBA progrmame from Prof. Staples, Prof. Kondo delivered a presentation that examined how the unique environment of Kyoto (geography, political importance, lack of physical resources and culture) has shaped local firms that today include Nintendo, Omron, Kyocera and Rohm. The second half of the seminar was led by Mr. Kenichi Kano, Director, Corporate Planning at Ippodo Tea Co., Ltd., who, in addition to delivering an engaging presentation about the history and development of this prestigious company, offered freshly brewed examples of the company's product to the enthusiastic audience. DBS is most thankful to Mr. Kano for his presentation and looks forward to strengthening the links between DBS and Ippodo Tea Co., Ltd.
A reception followed the seminar offering Global MBA students the opportunity to network with the visiting executives and for the audience as a whole to enjoy a glass of Doshisha branded wine from the Tanba Wine Company, also located in Kyoto.
We look forward to hosting further executive groups from HEC in the future.
Global MBA Research Seminar
May 18th, 2010
The new research seminar series got off to a great start on Saturday, 15th May with a presentation from Prof. Alex Mohr of Bradford School of Management, U.K. Prof. Mohr kindly took time from his busy three week visit to Japan to deliver a lecture on his latest research into issues of trust and performance in international joint ventures (IJVs). Using a data set from German companies operating in China, Prof. Mohr sought to challenge - and did so convincingly - the conventional wisdom within strategic management that performance follows trust. As a business school professor with considerable experience of teaching on MBA programmes, Prof. Mohr also sought to balance the academic rigour of the paper with relevance to practioners and the discussion that followed the lecture touched on how this research would be directly relevant to managers involved in structuring and managing IJVs. In addition to Global MBA students the audience included Professors from Rikkyo, Kobe and Ritsumeikan universities, and we thank them for their attendance.

A ceremony was held on the morning of March 27th, 2010 to commemorate this great honour.
