After obtaining his Ph.D. in the history of economics in the US, he began his career at the Nomura Research Institute (NRI) and was involved in industry analysis. He then developed his field into national security studies and international relations and is now involved in economic security studies. Before coming to DBS, he was Associate Professor at Kansai Gaidai University and then Professor at Osaka University of Foreign Studies.
