After having obtained both his BA and Ph.D. in Law from the University of Cambridge; he became Bigelow Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School (1986-87). He then held the post of Lecturer in Law at Queen Mary College, London (1987-90), followed by Lecturer, then Reader, in the Faculty of Law at Cambridge between 1990 and 2001. He was Robert Monks Professor of Corporate Governance at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge (2001-6). Then he became Acting Director for the Centre for Business Research at the University of Cambridge (Jan 2005-Dec 2006). Since 2006 he has been Professor of Law at the University of Cambridge. He was also Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia University in 2003. He has held Visiting Fellowships at Nantes (1993, 1995), Melbourne (1998) and EUI Florence (2004). He has held a Visiting Fellowship post at Doshisha University since 2004.
