Dr. Whittaker's research covers socio-economic change, in particular through the study of small firms and entrepreneurship, and management, governance and employment in large firms. Previously, he has taught at the University of Cambridge and later went on to assist in the establishment of the Doshisha Business School. Currently, he is Director of the Institute for Technology, Enterprise and Competitiveness (ITEC). He has held the position of editor of the Cambridge Journal of Economics (1999-2002) and is currently a professor of the University of Auckland. His recent publication include The New Community Firm: employment, governance and management reform in Japan (2005) (Cambridge University Press), Comparative Enterpreneurship: The UK, Japan, and the Shadow of Silicon Valley (2009) (OUP, Oxford) and Corporate Governance and Managerial Reform in Japan, (2009) (OUP, Oxford).
